Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the age requirement? If I’m over 30 can I still apply?

Students who are looking to move to Montreal from abroad or from another province may find it difficult to secure an apartment in the normal housing market, especially considering that people aged 18-30 may not have an employment history or much of a credit history. It's for this reason as well that we limit the duration of a stay to three years.

In addition, the crucial features of the residence are the weekly meal, volunteer commitment, biannual retreats, and general willingness to spend time in common spaces and share with fellow residents. In general, we find that this lifestyle is most compatible with young people who are studying at university or otherwise just starting their lives as independent adults.

For these reasons we do have a preference for students aged 18-30, but this is not a strict requirement and the most important qualification is compatibility with the values of the residence and a willingness to take part in community life.

  • Potlucks, volunteering, is that really necessary?

The volunteer requirement and weekly meal commitment are meant to be viewed as a positive feature, not as a punishing obligation! We emphasize the importance of these aspects of the MA residence because we are seeking individuals of a certain profile: those who are naturally inclined to take part in volunteer activities and to share meals with their housemates.

If you foresee some difficulty with these parts of residence life, if you feel that you could grudgingly take part in these activities if absolutely necessary but are not particularly interested in those things, please be aware before you apply that these are not optional, minor side issues! They are essential components of MA residence life.

  • Do I pay for my internet? What’s included in the rent?

The rent quoted is all-inclusive in terms of utilities: WiFi, heating, hot water, electricity, you name it.

The laundry room appliances are free to use, however you must purchase your own laundry detergent. You must provide your own bathroom supplies: toilet paper, soap, etc. Other than the weekly potlucks and other spontaneous shared meals, each resident provides their own food as well. Everyone pitches in once per session to buy dish soap and sponges for the main kitchen.
